De Watergroep didn’t only serve water in 2019, it also served beer! Together with waste water company Aquafin, we asked a brewer to create a beer out of treated sewage water.
With Rond’O, a beer for connoisseurs, Aquafin and De Watergroep wanted to demonstrate that sewage water can be treated to drinking water quality. The waste water received an initial treatment at Aquafin, before De Watergroep stepped in to further treat the effluent until water of drinkable quality was achieved. Using reverse osmosis, we removed all impurities, such as tiny residual medicine or pesticide particles and bacterial pollutants. We also added new minerals, as the treated water no longer contained adequate levels. Next, microbrewery Den Triest brewed several thousand bottles of our very own beer: Rond’O. The name refers to a medieval form of poetry in which rhyming sounds are repeated — just like the waste water we reused. The beer was distributed among De Watergroep's employees and partners and at multiple events, where it was positively received. Rond’O will continue to be served in 2020 at events such as Open Bedrijvendag — a day on which businesses throw open their doors to the general public.
